Ojuela Mines, Durango, Mexico

January, 2007

We went to Torreon, Mexico for work. While there we took a side road to Mipimi and Ojuela Mines. These mines are quite old and this bridge used to be for tracks to haul out the rock.

They now used the bridge to access and tour the mines on the other side. Its probably 1000-1500 feet long and 330 feet high.

Looking back once you cross the bridge at the old mining town.

We decided to take the mine tour.  They give you large carbide lamps for the tour. The mines are 17 levels deep with 150' between each level, thats a lot of mining!

Here we are taking the tour at level 1. Apparently some of the lower levels are full of water after they mined into an aquifer. They could not pump it dry after almost a year of trying.

They are exploring some of the lower levels that had been closed off 300-400 years ago. While exploring, they found this mumified mule that had apparently been left in the mine when they sealed it off. Now she's part of the tour.
